Perapahn

A large carnivorous invertebrate species of unknown origin; they have been found on planets across the galaxy.  Usually living in dark moist spaces, the perapahn grow up to 15lbs and can stretch to as long as 3meters.  Some species are long, others tend to be more rotund.  But all Perapahn have a wide mouth filled with several rows of jagged teeth.  The teeth aren’t used for chewing, but act as anchors, latching onto the flesh of its prey while the worm secrets a corrosive mucus that begins digestion in the mouth.  A single worm can consume a full sized Apsu man in less than 10mins.  The perapahn are ceaseless, and will eat to exhaustion once aroused, they will lay dormant for as long as a month without moving as much as an inch, but the very moment the scent of blood is detected, the beast flies into an absolute frenzy and will not calm down until long after there is nothing left.

A very simple organism, the perapahn has no bones or and only the simplest of muscles, the teeth are the hardest part of the body.  There are small dark eyes on either end of the worms head, but they can only see well enough to detect light.  The enumerable hairs that cover the perapahn’s outer body provide its acute sense of smell, as well as acting as an array of tiny legs that can move the worm at surprising speeds.  Usually appearing to be white, the perapahn are actually translucent and sensitive to light; hence their tendency to remain in dark places.

Perapahn are asexual creatures, at a certain point in the life cycle, eggs form in the lower tail area, and as they grow an develop the worms begin to eat their way free from the mother, who can survive until the head is all that remains.  And the cannibalism does not end there, just as they are aroused by the smell of blood of other animals, the perapahn will just as quickly turn on one of their own when it is injured.
