When creating characters and stories for neoXeno I employ a concept I call the “Ridiculous Extreme” where I take an idea, something small, simple or basic, and then I ponder it out to the craziest most unusual possible outcome I can imagine, making something curious or mildly interesting into something pretty out there. Here are a few examples;
The neoXeno project is borne of my life long love of the science fiction genre, but I felt limited from the beginning because I did not want it to be too similar to other major projects already in existence, but at the same time I wanted to be able to tell compelling stories without being to formulaic or mimicking details from stories I read and watched growing up. While not copying those stories I do retain the right to poke a little fun at them every now and then. (if I can’t give a character a laser sword, I can have a running gag about how such a device probably wouldn’t work.)
While at times I will make some things as ridiculous as possible, I also want to maintain a bit of scientific possibility, while most of these things are highly unlikely I would like some of the details to remain within the realm of scientific possibility. The History channel has a program that examines the possibilities of a lot of the technologies used in great Sci Fi movies; that show was a big influence on my thinking here. Instead of pulling something out of the ether and saying “this works” I prefer to really think it though and give details that could make sense to an actual scientist. Any scientist or science minded individuals with ideas, suggestions or corrections, feel free to share.
I’ve put a large amount of time into each species and society; some times I start with an outcome and then try to figure out how they may have gotten there (i.e. how did snake people with little social development achieve space travel?) Other times I will start with a circumstance (what would happen if someone gave space ships, computers and other technology to a socially underdeveloped bronze-age society?) and then extrapolate the results from there. Some ideas, details and story lines are little more than thought experiments resulting from this process.
So that’s generally where I’m coming from, I hope you enjoy my work. If you would like to get involved in the project feel free to offer your ideas, you will be duly credited. This site is a hobby for me, there is currently no profit being made (it’s a regular cost to maintain the hosting.)
